Local MP Jo Swinson has welcomed improvements made to the stretch of the Allander Way in Milngavie following her intervention on behalf of a young constituent.
In February Jo accompanied Euan McGeachie to examine the amount of rubbish on the Allander Way between Auchenhowie and Dobbies after receiving an email from the nine year old.
Since then Network Rail’s staff have carried out a cleanup removing 19 paint tins and 4 bags of rubbish. East Dunbartonshire Council will put a bin at the start of Allander Way to encourage people not to drop litter and the Ranger Service and volunteers will carry out clear-ups in addition to the yearly tending of the path. Tesco has taken the trolleys out of the water at the stretch of the Way by their Milngavie branch and cleared up the area along the Way that they are responsible for. However Tesco have yet to remove trolleys from the area further up the river as this needs to be undertaken by a specialist firm in light of the health and safety elements of going into the Allander.
Commenting, Jo said:
“I am certainly glad that effort has been made to make the Allander Way a place local people can enjoy without the blight of rubbish.
“Hopefully those residents who left litter strewn about will think twice now that improvements are being made.
“The action taken so far is encouraging but Tesco need to ensure they have their trolleys removed from further up the Allander.”
