Jo Swinson MP for East Dunbartonshire is supporting a new charity to promote the nation’s female athletes.
Alison Walker, a sports journalist and broadcaster from Bearsden is one of the team behind ‘Scottish Women in Sport’ an organisation dedicated to raising the profile of girls’ and women’s sport in Scotland.
The charity seeks to educate on the social and health benefits to girls and women of taking part in sport, to raise awareness of the opportunities available to girls and women to be as active as possible and to celebrate all that is great about Scotland’s female athletes. The charity has its formal launch on 13 November 2013.
Commenting Jo said:
“This is a fantastic charity that will hopefully raise awareness and highlight the achievements of our female athletes.
Commenting Alison Walker said:
“We really want more girls in Scotland to be active but they need healthy role models. That means we have to get media coverage for sport involving women to raise the profile.
“The media coverage of women in sport in Scotland is poor and the level of sponsorship in sport involving women is shocking. SWIS wants to address the imbalance and get sport involving women up the agenda. It is a great time for a charity like this to be launched after the impact of women in London 2012 and with the up and coming Commonwealth Games.”
