Local MP Jo Swinson is welcoming the news that unemployment in East Dunbartonshire continues to fall. There were 887 claimants on Job Seekers Allowance in East Dunbartonshire in June, down by 136 from the same time last year.
Commenting Jo said:
“This is the lowest unemployment has been since February 2009.
“Locally the latest figures are cause for optimism, though the picture is mixed when looking at Scotland as a whole where unemployment has increased slightly.
“It’s important that both levels of government put their efforts towards creating opportunities and getting people back into long term employment. That’s why Liberal Democrats have launched our ‘A Million Jobs’ campaign to get people working so that everyone has the opportunity to get on in life.
“Our first aim is to double the number of businesses that take on apprentices. I believe that apprenticeships are a great way to get people back to work and last year my Get East Dunbartonshire Working initiative led to 109 opportunities for – 77 of which turned into jobs.”
