Jo is backing a campaign by Cleddens Residents’ Group to stop Bishopbriggs Town Centre being taken over by supermarkets.
The group has produced a petition objecting to the inclusion of a giant supermarket and car park in Muse Developments’ plans for the town.
Jo has signed the petition, which warns that a large supermarket would bring with it an increase in traffic, causing congestion and pollution.
Last week, Jo urged the Council and developers to put environmental concerns at the heart of their plans for Bishopbriggs, after Kirkintilloch Road was named as one of Scotland’s 21 ‘air pollution hot spots’.
Commenting, Jo said:
“It is great to see that Cleddens Residents’ Group is taking action to stop the redevelopment of Bishopbriggs town centre being overtaken by supermarkets, and I was pleased to sign their petition.
“I was concerned to learn that Muse are considering building a huge supermarket and car park. My survey of Bishopbriggs residents in 2008 showed that people are looking for a wider range of shops and independent retailers in the town, not a bigger supermarket. The resulting increase in traffic could only reduce the quality of life of the people of Bishopbriggs.
“I am urging anyone who is concerned about the plans to visit my website and sign the petition at www.joswinson.org.uk/bbtowncentre.“
