Local MP Jo Swinson is encouraging local residents to sign an online petition in support of George Hamill and his fish van “Shaky’s Plaice”. Mr. Hamill has been given just 30 days to remove his business from the Sainsbury’s car park in Kirkintilloch after having been on the site for 18 years.
Commenting Jo said:
“I was taken aback when I heard that Sainsbury’s had given this local institution 30 days to close up shop and move on.
“I was explicitly assured that Shaky’s Plaice would be able to continue operating on the current site when I met with a representative from Sainsbury’s about their expansion plans less than two weeks ago, so the sudden change of heart is particularly disappointing.
“George Hamill has been a fishmonger in Kirkintilloch for over 30 years and his van “Shaky’s Plaice” has been in the corner of the car park in Kirkintilloch for 18 years – long before Sainsbury’s were there.
“In these difficult times when businesses are struggling no wants to see any local traders having to shut their doors.
“Sainsbury’s should think again about this unnecessary and unpopular move. I encourage local residents to support George and his wife and make their feelings clear to Sainsbury’s that they want to keep this small local business in the heart of the community. The online petition is available at http://bit.ly/shakysplaice.”
