Jo Swinson MP for East Dunbartonshire calls on the Scottish Government to honour its pledge to build more housing in the community
Jo Swinson MP has learned from a Freedom of Information request that more than 2500 people in East Dunbartonshire have been on a waiting list for a home for over two years. The local authority has more than 4500 applicants currently on its list.
As of last October more than 120,000 households across Scotland had been waiting for over a year and more than 81,000 of these had been stuck on waiting lists for over two years. Housing need is reaching crisis levels in Scotland which is why the Scottish Liberal Democrats called for the Scottish Government to deliver on its pledge to build 6,000 new homes for social rent each year. While more funds to build homes for rent has been allocated, to reach the homeless targets and the desperate need for more homes the Scottish Liberal Democrats will continue to press for more.
Commenting Jo Swinson said:
“With thousands of local people stuck on waiting lists for years on end, there has to be a stronger focus on building more social housing so that families can finally access a home of their own.”
“The SNP made a manifesto commitment to build 6,000 socially rented homes annually but despite having a majority in the Scottish Parliament Ministers have reneged on this promise in recent months.”
“Thanks to the Coalition Government, there are significantly more resources at the disposal of the Scottish Government since the draft Budget was published last September. They now have the funds available that will help deliver their own commitment to 6,000 new homes for rent each year.”
The wrong choice on housing today means that thousands of families will be left stuck on waiting lists for years to come.”
- As of 1 October 2011 the local authority was dealing with 4580 housing applications. 3477 have been on the waiting list for longer than 12 months. 2980 have been on the waiting list for longer than 18 months. 2638 have been on the waiting list for longer than 24 months.
- The SNP manifesto 2011 states: “Overall, our aim is to build over 6,000 new socially-rented houses each year.”
The Scottish Government has an extra £433 million from the UK Government available for the Scottish Budget than when they published their draft budget plans in September.
