Positive news on Government announcement for happiness index – Jo

Jo has welcomed reports that the Government will announce plans to measure the UK’s happiness in a ‘wellbeing index’.

Later this month, the Office for National Statistics will devise new questions in order to gauge people’s happiness through existing household surveys.

As chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Wellbeing Economics, Jo has campaigned to take the wellbeing agenda forward in Parliament and for the nation’s wellbeing to be measured regularly, in addition to traditional economic measures of progress.

Commenting, Jo said:

“This is a positive and forward-looking move by the Government, which will give us a much better idea of the health of UK society. Relying solely on GDP to track the nation’s progress excludes many of the things that we all know to be important, but that can’t be measured by money.

“What gets measured gets done. While it’s not a government’s job to make people happy, regular measures of wellbeing will at least make sure it is taken into account.”
