This is the second year that the Festival of Politics has been running

Taking part in a 'balloon debate' at the Holyrood Festival of Politics today, Liberal Democrat Shadow Secretary of State for Scotland Jo Swinson argued the case that politics makes the greatest difference to society, against representatives from the arts, faith and the media.

Ms Swinson has welcomed this year's expanded line-up of events, and sees the Festival of Politics rapidly becoming an established feature of the Edinburgh Festival programme.

Ms Swinson commented:

"The Festival of Politics is an excellent addition to both the Edinburgh Festival and Scottish politics in general.

"Scotland's politics is integral to the country's cultural fabric, so it is only proper that Scotland's greatest cultural festival should reserve a place for showcasing its political scene. The festival brings a range of political debates into the public arena, encouraging comment, discussion and participation.

"With a greatly expanded programme of events since its inception last year, I am sure the Festival of Politics will continue to go from strength to strength in years to come."
