Jo welcomes rethink of repressive anti-terror laws

5.55.47pm BST (GMT +0100) Thu 15th Jul 2010

Jo has welcomed the announcement of a review of counter-terror legislation introduced by the Labour Government.

The Home Secretary announced the review in the House of Commons this week, to reassess controversial counter-terror laws such as detention without charge, police stop-and-search powers and surveillance by local authorities.

Commenting, Jo said:

"The Labour Government was too willing to ride rough shod over civil liberties in the name of counter terrorism.

"Many of these powers have not contributed in any way to combating terrorism, and instead have been used against ordinary people without proper justification.

"The Liberal Democrats opposed these powers when they were introduced and I am very glad that this Government is committed to ensuring that the right balance between security and protecting the rights of individual citizens can at last be restored."
