Torture inquiry long overdue - Jo9.57.11am BST (GMT +0100) Tue 13th Jul 2010 Jo has welcomed the Government's announcement of an independent inquiry into Britain's involvement in the torture of detainees. The Prime Minister last week announced that there would be an independent judge-led inquiry into Britain's role in the rendition and torture of terror suspects since September 11th bombings in 2001. Commenting, Jo said: "This announcement is long overdue. Now they are out of power Labour can no longer cover up their shameful record. A full judicial inquiry was a key Liberal Democrat manifesto pledge, and I am delighted that we now have the opportunity to implement it. Only by getting the facts out in the open can we begin to restore Britain's tarnished reputation as a defender of human rights." The Liberal Democrats were the only major party with a pledge to hold an inquiry into allegations of British Government complicity in torture in their General Election manifesto.
