350 campaign

Jo is encouraging local people to bring her their messages for the Prime Minister as part of an international day of action on climate change.

On 24th October people all over the world will hold events and activities to raise awareness of the need for solutions to combat climate change. The day of action is being coordinated by an international grassroots campaign called 350.org, and is intended to deliver a message to world leaders six weeks before they meet in Copenhagen to discuss a new treaty on climate change. Activities taking place around the world range from a mass cycle ride in Beijing to a "human banner" in Edinburgh, and will call for a climate change treaty which meets the demands of science. The number 350 represents parts per million, the level scientists have identified as the safe upper limit for CO2 in our atmosphere.

Jo will be at The Hub at Woodhill Evangelical Church in Bishopbriggs from 1:30 - 2:30pm, and at Bearsden Burgh Hall from 11:30am-12:30pm on Saturday 24th October, collecting messages on climate change from local people, to hang on a special 350 day tree. She will then take your messages to Downing Street to give to Gordon Brown in advance of the conference in Copenhagen.

Jo will also be collecting messages from pupils at the High School of Glasgow at a special school assembly on Friday 23rd October, and will collect more as she visits churches around East Dunbartonshire on Sunday 25th October.

Commenting, Jo said:

"The 350 Day of Action is a great opportunity for communities to come together to call for a fair global treaty on climate change.

"Governments around the world will now be finalising their positions ready for the conference in Copenhagen in December, and the negotiations that have taken place so far are not ambitious enough. It is essential that we do all we can to persuade Gordon Brown to listen to what scientists are telling us and aim for a deal that will enable us to avoid devastating climate change.

"I am encouraging as many people as possible to come down to The Hub at Woodhill Evangelical Church or Bearsden Burgh Hall on Sunday 24th October to give me their messages for Gordon Brown. I will deliver the message to him that the people of East Dunbartonshire want urgent action to protect our planet."
