Liberal Democrat Shadow Chancellor Vince Cable lent his support to local campaigners this weekend on a visit to East Dunbartonshire.

Shortly after his arrival in East Dunbartonshire on Saturday afternoon, Vince travelled to Low Moss Prison with Jo Swinson MP to support the campaign by local residents to oppose the renaming of the prison as 'HMP Bishopbriggs'.

Commenting, Vince Cable said:

"It is clear to me even from this brief visit that the people of Bishopbriggs feel very strongly about the renaming of Low Moss Prison. I'm impressed by the momentum the campaign has gathered and I hope that the Scottish Government and the Scottish Prison Service will listen to Jo Swinson and her constituents and make the right decision."

Commenting, Jo Swinson said:

"Obviously I'm thrilled that we have Vince's support for this campaign, which is growing by the day. We have now gathered over 2,500 signatures from local residents, and all we are asking is that the Scottish Government step in and rule out 'HMP Bishopbriggs' as a name for the new prison. It really is that simple!"
