Life expectancy discrepancy 'unacceptable'

6.19.24pm GMT Fri 29th Aug 2008

Commenting on World Health Organisation figures detailing the relative life expectancy of men in Lenzie (82) and Calton (54), Jo Swinson MP said:

"These figures paint a welcome picture of the health of people in Lenzie but for residents in Calton the picture is far from rosy. Such inequality between areas just a few miles apart is simply unacceptable.

"As a wealthy developed country, Scotland should not be allowing its children to enter the world into the kind of deprivation that leaves their life expectancy seriously damaged from birth.

"More and more, Labour's legacy on social inequality is a trail of empty rhetoric and squandered opportunities."
