Jo Swinson was among over 13,000 women who took to the streets of Glasgow today for the 2008 Race for Life.

Jo completed the 5km event, which began on Glasgow Green and ran into Buchanan St in the city centre, in a time of 28 minutes and 38 seconds.

The Race for Life is the UK's biggest women-only fundraising event. Since it began in 1994, some 3.4 million women have raised more than £200m for Cancer Research UK.

Commenting, Jo said:

"The turnout of runners at this year's race was brilliant and the enthusiasm of the supporters also helped enormously. The amount of interest in the race highlights just how many people want to contribute to cancer research, or are affected by it in some way.

"Some of the runners were cancer survivors themselves, while others took part in memory or in celebration of family and loved ones. The day was emotional and inspiring at the same time"

Cancer Research UK is the worlds leading independent charity dedicated to research on the causes, treatment and prevention of cancer; developing effective treatments to ultimately reduce the number of people getting cancer.

Each year more than 44,000 women and 300 men are diagnosed with breast cancer. More women are surviving breast cancer than ever before, but still 12,000 women and 200 men die each year even though in the last 10 years death rates have fallen by almost a fifth.
