Jo Swinson marked Fairtrade Fortnight today by paying tribute to the retailers backing Fairtrade in East Dunbartonshire.

A study of Fairtrade in East Dunbartonshire carried out by Jo has revealed the patterns of Fairtrade products stocked by local retailers.

The Balmore Coach House sells the highest proportion of Fairtrade products of any local retailer. Two thirds of the stock in the Coach House is fairly traded third world goods, while the other third is made up of Scottish crafts, charity goods and environmental products. Tesco Milngavie carries the highest number of Fairtrade products overall, with 95 different product lines stocked.

Jo visited the Balmore Coach House and Tesco Milngavie to discuss the sale of Fairtrade products with store managers. Commenting after the visits, she said:

"The Coach House in Balmore has led the way on Fairtrade in East Dunbartonshire for a number of years. It has a great range of Fairtrade products from foods to crafts and gifts. It is also good to see the large supermarkets supporting Fairtrade, with Tesco in Milngavie carrying the largest Fairtrade range of any local store.

"The growth in local consumers' awareness of Fairtrade is very encouraging. From independent shops to large retailers, Fairtrade is clearly welcomed and supported in this area.

"UK-wide, total sales of Fairtrade produce in 2003 represented only 0.17% of total spending on food and drink. This highlights that there is so much more to be done and it is up to East Dunbartonshire to set an example to other parts of the country on Fairtrade."

The Balmore Coach House is holding a 'Fairtrade Breakfast' on Saturday 8th March in Balmore Church Hall. For further information, the Coach House can be contacted on 01360 620742.
