Jo praises green action at Bearsden school

1.05.00pm GMT Wed 19th Dec 2007

Jo Swinson praised the environmental work of pupils at the High School of Glasgow Junior School in Bearsden, during a visit to the school today.

Jo discussed environmental issues with pupils from the school's eco-committee, including the Green Flag recently awarded by Eco-Schools for the green activities that have been established on campus.

Commenting after the visit, she said:

"The pupils at the High School of Glasgow Junior School have done a great job in promoting green thinking in their classrooms.

"Through activities from recycling in school to switching unused lights off, the pupils are being given an awareness at a young age of the environmental challenges their generation will face.

"Congratulations to the school on securing the Green Flag award from Eco-Schools. It is a deserved endorsement of the way in which the school has supported green thinking both in the classroom and through extra-curricular activities."

Eco Schools is an international initiative designed to encourage whole-school action for the environment. It is an environmental management tool, learning resource and recognised award scheme.

Over 2,800 schools are registered with the Eco-Schools programme in Scotland and over 15% of these schools have attained the highest award level - the Green Flag.
