Nick Clegg takes over from Vince Cable as Lib Dem leader

Jo Swinson has welcomed the announcement today of Nick Clegg as new leader of the Liberal Democrats.

Reacting to the result of the leadership contest, she said:

"I am delighted that Liberal Democrat party has chosen Nick Clegg as its new leader. It is the right choice, and Nick is the right leader to take us into an exciting new period of politics.

"People have been appalled at the Government's failures over Northern Rock, the loss of millions of personal data records and Labour's loans scandal. It is also clear that they can see through David Cameron's substance-free approach.

"Nick Clegg has the passion and ability to lead the party as we look to win the support of voters seeking an alternative to the tired choices offered by Labour and the Tories."
