Jo praises sailing club on Anniversary year4.51.13pm GMT Mon 13th Aug 2007
Jo Swinson has paid tribute to the Clyde Cruising Club Dinghy Section, which marks its 75th Anniversary this year, during a visit to the club's base at Bardowie Loch. Clyde Cruising Club Dinghy Section has 450 members, aged from 8 to over 80. Accredited with Royal Yachting Association Training Club status, the club provides evening sailing classes every night between April and September, with race nights held on Thursdays. During the summer holidays, week-long training courses are held for schoolchildren and interested adults. Commenting on the visit, Jo said: "The Clyde Cruising Club Dinghy Section provides a great service to sailors of all ages and abilities. It was great to see so many schoolchildren taking advantage of the training courses on offer during their summer holidays. "Many congratulations to the club on reaching its 75th Anniversary this year. This milestone is a testament to the commitment of the club's members, as well as the enduring popularity of sailing as a sport in this area. "Sailing is traditionally a discipline in which British sportsmen and women have excelled. With the 2012 Olympics on the horizon, the sailing club has an important role to play in nurturing the young sailors who may be challenging for medals at this and other major events in the future." A spokesperson for Clyde Cruising Club Dinghy Section said: "We are proud of being a club run by its members, for its members. We often say that the sailing club is East Dunbartonshire's 'Best Kept Secret', but once people discover the great facilities and instructors we have at Bardowie Loch, they are usually keen to get involved. "Right now we have lots of kids are coming along to take advantage of the training courses during their summer holidays. "Going back into the club's history, we have had members who have sailed round the world having started out by learning on Bardowie Loch, so we like to remind our members, particularly the younger ones, that there is no limit to where sailing can take them."
