Jo pleased with strong by-election showings5.42.38pm BST (GMT +0100) Fri 20th Jul 2007
The Liberal Democrats are celebrating after strong results in both the Ealing and Sedgefield by-elections. Lib Dem candidates Nigel Bakhai and Greg Stone came second in Ealing Southall and Sedgefield respectively. In Ealing, Labour's majority was slashed by the Lib Dems, while the Tories put in a poor showing, finishing third in a seat personally targeted by David Cameron. In Sedgefield, Labour's majority plummeted, with a 10% swing to the Lib Dems. Commenting on the results, Jo said: "These are both strong results that give the party a great platform to build on. Obviously we were aiming to win both seats, but with the Lib Dems taking a large slice of Labour's majority at the same time as holding off the challenge from the Tories, we can be well pleased with this showing. "Voters clearly don't trust David Cameron, and are choosing the Liberal Democrats as the real party of opposition. Three party politics is here to stay." Related Link:
