Jo takes up Lib Dem Equalities post

5.15.00pm BST (GMT +0100) Tue 3rd Jul 2007

Jo Swinson will seek to promote equality and fight discrimination in her new role as Liberal Democrat Shadow Minister for Women and Equalities.

Commenting on the new appointment, Jo said:

"My new portfolio on equality will present me with fresh challenges in an area that I am passionate about. I very much look forward to getting stuck into the new role.

"30 years on from the Sex Discrimination Act, there is still a long way to go on issues such as the gender pay gap. In times of tension, ensuring an equal voice for the different faiths in our communities is key to establishing a fair and tolerant society."

Jo is already chair of the Liberal Democrats' Campaign for Gender Balance
