The funding is part of a £17m project which will also see the cottage where Burns was born restored

Commenting on the award of £5.8m from the National Lottery for a museum dedicated to Robert Burns, Liberal Democrat Shadow Scottish Secretary, Jo Swinson said:

"This important award is to be welcomed.

"Robert Burns is a national icon and a beacon for Scottish culture worldwide.

"Whilst his place in literary discourse is assured, this museum will ensure his legacy is made more accessible to inspire future generations.

"This is a timely example of the vital importance of ensuring that that Lottery funding earmarked for Scotland reaches Scotland."
