Robust debate not token gestures needed on future of the Union

Jo has called for a Constitutional Convention to examine the future of devolution throughout the UK

Commenting on the Chancellor launching a coin to celebrate the Union between Scotland and England, Liberal Democrat Shadow Scottish Secretary Jo Swinson said:

"The 300th anniversary of the Act of Union is an historic milestone worthy of proper celebration.

"There should be debate as to how the current settlement works and how to ensure it endures into the future.

"Instead this insulting token gesture from the Chancellor is the only official English commemoration.

"Liberal Democrats would like to see this anniversary marked by a proper and vigorous debate on increasing devolution on both sides of the border. Unfortunately, the Chancellor seems to be more interested in burying his head in the sand."
