The 'Help Yourselves' Here to Help Awards offer funding for young people to put community projects into practice
|
Jo Swinson is supporting a new scheme to give young people in East Dunbartonshire the chance to put their own ideas about improving their communities into practice.
'Help Yourselves' is a Here to Help awards scheme being run by Save the Children and British Gas, which aims to get young people involved in dynamic and lasting community projects. Awards of up to £3,000 are on offer, with 91 new projects around the country already having received funding.
Jo Swinson commented:
"Putting young people at the heart of community projects is key to making them active, interested and socially responsible people.
"These awards do just that - supporting young people as they put forward ideas and develop local projects to improve their communities.
"All too often, the voice of young people is ignored or marginalised, leading to a disengagement of community activities. Of course, part of being young is about rebelling against what has gone before, but this can be done in a positive way by harnessing new ideas.
"I have signed an Parliamentary Motion supporting Here to Help, and am in the process of writing to schools and youth groups across East Dunbartonshire to encourage them to get involved."
Young people looking to take part should visit www.helpyourselves.org.uk, where they can submit proposals. The deadline for the current round of awards is October 2006.
