Jo Swinson urging consumers to check food labels for salt content

The Food Standards Agency recomment consuming no more than 6 grams of salt per day, approximately equivalent to one teaspoon

Jo Swinson MP is urging East Dunbartonshire shoppers to check the labels on food packets, in order to cut down their salt intake.

Jo joined colleagues at an event in the House of Commons last week to preview the Food Standards Agency's new TV advert, being aired from July 10th, which urges consumers to eat less than 6 grams, or one teaspoon, of salt a day.

Jo said:

"Due to leading busy lifestyles and the high salt content of processed foods, many of us struggle to reduce our salt intake.

"Eating too much salt can cause high blood pressure, which increases the risk of developing heart disease and stroke, so it's important to get your salt intake levels down.

"By checking food labels, avoiding high-salt foods and sticking below the guideline 6 grams a day, we can combat the problems associated with a high-salt diet."

Deirdre Hutton, Chair of the Food Standards Agency, said:

"I was delighted to see Jo Swinson at this event, taking an interest in diet and health issues.

"We want to encourage consumers to check food labels before they buy to make healthier choices. MPs are busy people and they need as much help as everyone else. So, check the label."

Jo was photographed with the FSA's spaghetti bolognese food pack character to draw attention to the FSA's healthy eating message.

About 75% of the salt we eat comes from processed food.
