Jo addresses Thomas Muir and Lenzie pupils

4.00.00pm GMT Tue 21st Feb 2006

Jo Swinson has addressed school pupils at Thomas Muir High and Lenzie Academy on her work as an MP.

Speaking to Standard Grade and Higher pupils, Jo gave a talk which included an assessment of current legislation on ID cards and terrorism, and answered questions on everything from votes at 16 to the ban on smoking in public places.

Commenting on the visits, Jo said:

"Meeting bright, inquisitive schoolchildren is one of the more rewarding parts of my job. I am constantly reassured that young people are interested in political issues. They have strong opinions and are keen to get involved when the issues at stake are made accessible to them.

"It is very important that politics is made an approachable subject, and politicians approachable people, for young people who are beginning to participate in the political system.

"Meeting with staff and headteachers gives me the chance to grasp the issues faced by each individual school. At both schools I was given a warm welcome by pupils and staff."
