The VE celebrations in Bishopbriggs were a great success

Jo Swinson attended her first constituency event as the new MP for East Dunbartonshire on Friday, when she supported the VE Day celebrations in Bishopbriggs.

Organised by the Council and local community groups, the celebrations included an exhibition, people dressed in clothes of the 1940s and a barrage balloon flying over the library.

Some veterans attended the event, as well as many schoolchildren from nearby primary schools. A service was held at 4:00pm by the Community Council Beacon, lit for the occasion. The service included the lament on the bagpipes, a two minutes' silence and some unaccompanied but enthusiastic singing.

Speaking after the event Jo Swinson said, "Remembering that the freedom we enjoy today was hard fought for 60 years ago is important. New generations need to understand the sacrifices made and the value that must be placed on our peaceful co-existence and co-operation with neighbouring countries.

"These celebrations were very welcome, well attended and supported by young and old alike. Even the sun decided to shine!"
