The Lib Dems can win in East Dunbartonshire
|
An opinion poll in the Sunday Mail today (13 March 2005), suggests that Labour's support across Scotland has slumped, with the Liberal Democrats the main beneficiaries. Support is also slipping for the Conservatives and SNP.
The 6% swing based on the 2001 General Election results, would see local Lib Dem candidate Jo Swinson win East Dunbartonshire comfortably in May's expected General Election.
Scotland on Sunday also predicted a Lib Dem win in East Dunbartonshire last month.
Commenting on the latest opinion poll figures, Jo Swinson said:
"Obviously you have to take these figures with a pinch of salt, but there does appear to be a pattern forming. These polls reflect what we are finding on the doorstep, with many Labour, Tory and SNP supporters saying they will be voting Lib Dem for the first time this year.
"The Labour leader's panic visit to the constituency last week appears to have had the opposite effect to what was intended. Local people want to see Tony Blair challenged on his record, not welcomed by his candidate. They know that only the Liberal Democrats can beat Labour here."
