Free Eye and Dental Checks

7.58.30pm GMT Sat 20th Nov 2004

A Bill to introduce free eye and dental checks is due to be brought forward in the coming year by the Scottish Executive. East Dunbartonshire Lib Dem Parliamentary Spokesperson Jo Swinson welcomed the good news, "The introduction of free eye and dental checks will be a significant step towards achieving a better standard of health for Scots."

A survey carried out as part of National Eye Week has shown that 71% of parents of children under the age of nine have never taken their children for an eye examination. Jo commented, "People are afraid about the cost of an eye test even when it would be free for them. Children's eye tests are free yet parents do not seem to be using this service as they are still concerned or confused about how much it will cost. It is important that the legislation to introduce free eye and dental checks is brought in as soon as possible."
