Jo continues campaign to Save Local Post Offices9.38.30pm BST (GMT +0100) Thu 2nd Sep 2004
Morrisons recently announced their intention to close the Post Office within the Safeway store in Bishopbriggs. The news comes just after the Post Office decided to close four Post Offices in East Dunbartonshire - at Auchinairn, Courthill, Killermont and Westerton. Local Lib Dem Parliamentary Spokesperson Jo Swinson has been campaigning against the closures. Jo said, "The closure of these four Post Office branches is a devastating blow to the community. I am disappointed with the response form the Labour Government, who seem to think the current consultation process is working. Labour have abdicated their responsibility by refusing to intervene, even though they are the major shareholder in the Post Office." Jo Swinson and Cllr Margaret McNaughton are working with local people in Bishopbriggs to keep the Post Office at Safeway. Jo and her team have delivered petition slips to every house in Bishopbriggs, and taken the message from Bishopbriggs people directly to Morrisons head office in Yorkshire. "The response has been overwhelming. People are angry that Morrisons want to axe this vital local service, just for the sake of more retail space. It is their own customers who will suffer as a result of this decision. Morrisons must reconsider."
