Local MP Jo Swinson is pleased that children starting primary school in East Dunbartonshire in August will now stay for a full day from the first Monday in September.
East Dunbartonshire Council ran a consultation last year asking parents if they wanted to see a change to the current arrangements for P1 pupils. Only 22% said they wanted no change at all, with 41% backing full attendance from the start of the August term and 37% saying they wanted the full day to start in September.
Lib Dem Councillor and Education Convener Eric Gotts made the decision that P1 pupils should begin full-time education from the first week in September after taking in the views of the parents and also teachers and trade unions.
Commenting, Jo said:
“Local parents have previously told me of their concerns about the current arrangements where P1 pupils do not attend for a full day for many weeks, and with over 1,000 responses to this consultation it’s clear that change is widely desired. This step will help parents with childcare and work arrangements and will allow children to get more out of their school experience. I am pleased that Liberal Democrat Councillor Eric Gotts has helped deliver these well supported changes.”
