Missed cancer waiting time targets harm research gains - Jo

Jo Swinson, East Dunbartonshire Liberal Democrat candidate and Business Minister, and former Liberal Democrat leader Sir Menzies Campbell visited the award-winning Beatson Institute this morning to learn about their work improving outcomes for cancer patients.

Jo and Sir Menzies met with Professor Karen Vousden, Director of the Beatson, to ask questions about their current research projects, how they work with hospitals and industry, and the implications of their life saving drug discovery work.

Commenting Jo said:

“As ever I enjoyed speaking with Professor Vousden and her team of researchers about the work they do to find better ways to treat and diagnose cancer.

“Two in four people diagnosed with cancer today in the UK will survive their disease for at least ten years, compared to just one in four in the early 1970s.

“But despite the successes, there is still that more can be done to help people in Scotland and across the UK beat cancer sooner. Early diagnosis and fast treatment are key which is why the current situation of missed cancer waiting time targets in Scotland is so worrying.

“Liberal Democrats are the only party to commit to an additional £800 million in NHS spending for Scotland in the next Parliament, to help ease the increasing strain our NHS is under.”
