Johnston Press survey shows majority back staying in single market

The recent ‘Big Brexit Survey’ conducted by regional newspaper publisher Johnston Press has shown that the majority of the British public back staying in the Single Market, including 1 in 5 Leave voters.

Johnston Press is one of the biggest publishers in the UK regional press with 300 weekly newspapers and 18 daily titles.

The survey, carried out in partnership with Google Surveys, gathered responses from 216,787 voters to key questions on Britain’s future relationship with the EU, using an extensive network of local and regional news websites.

East Dunbartonshire voted to Remain in the 2016 referendum. 71 per cent of residents (44,534) voted to stay in the European Union and 29 per cent (17,840) voted Leave.

Commenting on the survey results, local MP Jo Swinson said:

“Theresa May must stop pursuing her damaging extreme Brexit and accept that many people want to retain key features of our current arrangements with our European partners.

“The people of East Dunbartonshire voted overwhelmingly in favour of remaining in the European Union, and I will continue to make that case in Westminster and beyond.

“As the Brexit negotiations drag on under this incompetent government, we are beginning to get more details of what Brexit might look like. It is only right that the people should have the final say on the terms of the deal.”
