Local MP Jo Swinson recently visited Auchinairn After School Care and Forest School in Bishopbriggs to meet with children and staff. She discussed the “forest school” concept with the staff, and took part in outdoor activities with the children.
Forest schools originally came from Scandinavia. They were introduced to the UK in the 1990s and are centred around the concept that by allowing children to play freely in woodland areas, and allowing them to take supervised risks like building fires and climbing trees, they will be able to become more independent.
“It was wonderful to see the children enjoying themselves in this beautiful woodland setting. The children were exploring and learning outdoors skills in the natural environment. The forest schools concept is an interesting one, and it seems to be working here.”
