Jo Swinson MP for East Dunbartonshire spent time meeting and greeting customers and helping in store at the Scotmid branch in Bearsden on Friday as part of the Liberal Democrat ‘A Million Jobs’ campaign to double the number of apprenticeships across the UK.
Commenting, Jo said:
“The Liberal Democrats in Government have helped business create more than a million private sector jobs and now we’re working to create a million more. Apprenticeships are key to that.
“It’s been a while since I’ve worked in retail and it was an enjoyable experience spending time as an apprentice. I learnt a lot from manager Mark Buchanan about working life at Scotmid.”
Commenting Steve McDonald, Head of HR for Scotmid Co-operative said:
“We are very happy to be working with Jo Swinson MP to highlight the benefits of work experience to both young people and other employers.
“Scotmid Co-operative recently successfully took part in the Feeding Britain’s Future initiative which involved offering employability workshops to young people around Scotland in conjunction with Job Centre Plus. Scotmid also work with a variety of community groups to provide work experience opportunities which is a great way for young people to gain invaluable employment skills. Taking up a placement with Scotmid can open up many opportunities for the future; from customer service to stock management, marketing to logistics, the skills that working at Scotmid can help you develop are vast and varied. We would encourage any young people wishing to try a work experience placement to get in touch with their local employment agency to find out how we can help.”
