Jo Swinson launches Annual Report with a “flying visit” from Lembit Opik MP

Jo Swinson – reporting back on her record of action for East Dunbartonshire

Lembit Opik MP flew into East Dunbartonshire to help Jo Swinson launch her Annual Report on Friday night in Bearsden. The Annual Report reports back to the people of East Dunbartonshire on the work Jo Swinson has been doing in the local community over the past 12 months. In particular Jo’s campaigns to Save Bishopbriggs Post Office, Axe the Council Tax and for Fairer Pensions are highlighted.

Jo was selected as the Parliamentary Spokesperson for this area back in December 2003, and has been active in the community visiting local residents’ associations, community councils and groups for young and elderly people. Her Annual Report will be delivered to over 37,000 households in East Dunbartonshire over the next few weeks by local Lib Dem volunteers.

Commenting on the launch of the Annual Report, Jo said, “Communication between politicians and the communities they serve is really important. My Annual Report will let local people see what I have been working hard on over the past year, and they can use the feedback form to get in touch with me to let me know what they think. Regular contact is also vital, which is why we will continue to produce and deliver the local Focus newsletters.”

Lembit (who has a pilot’s licence) flew in specially to launch Jo’s report and speak at the local Liberal Democrats’ Annual Dinner, then flew back down to his constituency in Wales the same night.

In his after-dinner speech Lembit Opik MP said, “Jo Swinson will be a first-class MP for East Dunbartonshire. There’s very few people I would make a 650 mile round trip for, but Jo is such a great candidate that I was delighted to help. She has certainly got what it takes to win East Dunbartonshire, and give people here a better standard of representation than they’ve ever had before.”

As he boarded his plane to fly back to Wales Lembit had a few words of wisdom for Jo, “You’re doing brilliantly – keep up the hard work and the sky’s the limit!”
