Jo speaks to Lenzie Academy pupils about her role as an MP

Jo Swinson MP for East Dunbartonshire paid a visit to Lenzie Academy on Friday (31 January) to speak with the S4 Modern Studies Class about her role as an MP and Government Minister.

The local MP was invited by Lenzie Academy to discuss a typical day in Parliament, how she represents her constituents and the state of politics today. She has attended the school a number of times to speak with Modern Studies students.

Speaking after the visit, Jo said:

“It was great to be invited by Lenzie Academy to speak to the S4 Modern Studies class and I was happy to provide them with insight into the busy life of a parliamentarian. Judging by the questions the pupils asked they are clearly tuned in to current events.

“My visit came just days before yesterday’s vote by MPs in the House of Commons to back votes for 16- and 17-year-olds in Scottish elections. Thanks to Scottish Secretary Alistair Carmichael fast tracking the legislation it will come into force in time for the 2016 Holyrood election.

“It is vital that we encourage young people to learn about and become engaged in politics, especially as we approach the General Election. For many of our local young people the referendum awakened an interest in politics and it’s clear that they have a valuable contribution to make and that their voices should be heard.”
