Ukraine has undergone revolution and political upheaval in the past few years
Jo Swinson MP, Liberal Democrat Shadow Secretary of State for Scotland, is looking forward to imparting some of the secrets of her electoral success to women in one of Europe’s fledgling democracies.
Jo will travel to Kiev today, to train aspiring women politicians at the Women to Win Conference, organised by the European Liberal Democrat and Reform Party.
Commenting ahead of the conference, Jo said:
“Ukraine has been through real political turmoil in the past few years, but has emerged as nation keen to build a stable, democratic society. The voice of women in Ukrainian politics must be established for the country’s democracy to develop successfully.
“Despite the fact that Ukrainian women have a potent figurehead in Yulia Tymoshenko, just 7% of the country’s MPs are female, a record even worse than that of the UK. The time is right to encourage and empower women who are seeking to get involved in Ukrainian politics.”
The Women to Win conference is supported by the National Democratic Institute (NDI) in Ukraine and the European Parliament. Jo will be joined at the conference by women from political organisations across Europe, including UK Liberal Democrats’ Gender Balance Task Force.
