Jo wants more women involved in politics
Jo Swinson has made a rallying call to potential female MPs, to try and increase the number of women standing for election.
Addressing the Liberal Democrat conference in Blackpool on Sunday, Jo spoke in a debate about improving gender balance within Parliament.
Jo commented: “There are seven new women Lib Dem MPs since 2001, and 33% of our new MPs are women. Great strides in gender balance have already been made, and we are right to celebrate the success we have achieved so far.
“However, we must recognise that we still have lots of work to do. 9 women out of 62 MPs is not nearly enough. We must continue to seek out new women candidates, and support women to get selected for winnable seats.”
Jo, who is the only woman Liberal Democrat MP in Scotland, has been vice-chair of the Gender Balance Task Force since 2003. The Gender Balance Task Force has encouraged more women to stand as candidates at all levels of election
