Jo raises concerns about local transport links to new Glasgow hospital

East Dunbartonshire Liberal Democrat candidate and Business Minister Jo Swinson has written to Strathclyde Partnership for Transport raising local residents’ concerns about accessibility to the new South Glasgow University Hospital (SGUH) campus.

Milngavie and Bearsden residents who currently travel to Gartnavel Hospital will face long journeys once the transfer of a number of wards to the SGUH is completed.

Commenting Jo said:

“There must be proper arrangements for public transport in place so that the South Glasgow University Hospital is accessible to the people who need its vital services.

“I want to ensure that has all been thought through to allow ease of access for my constituents, since it’s ridiculous to have a new hospital where long journey times become an added burden to the already sick.”

Dear Mr. Stewart,

A number of constituents have been in touch with me to highlight their concerns regarding transport links from our area to the new South Glasgow University Hospital once it opens and the transfer of hospital wards from Gartnavel is complete.

There is a large elderly population in this area, many of whom have to attend hospital regularly, and this can be a long and difficult journey for those already struggling with health problems. For those who live in the Bearsden and Milngavie area the journey will take up to an hour, which is a long time for sick, elderly and disabled people, especially if they are waiting in the cold or extreme heat.

Many local people feel that we are already poorly served by buses, but that something must be done to fix this particular problem given that the accessibility of health services is paramount. Please outline what steps Strathclyde Partnership for Transport is taking to improve accessibility to the SGUH campus for communities in my constituency.

Yours sincerely

Jo Swinson MP
