Local MP Jo Swinson recently visited St Mary’s Kenmure, a secure residential and education unit for vulnerable young people in Bishopbriggs.
St Mary’s provides a controlled and safe environment for young people who may be at risk of sexual exploitation, self harm, or other issues stemming from neglect or mistreatment. It has also recently received funding to create a unit for girls at risk of sexual exploitation.
During her visit, Jo spoke to some of the 24 young people currently accommodated in the facility about their personal experiences and the help they’ve received at St Mary’s. Jo heard of its approach to addressing the root causes of the problems affecting young people, while focusing on well-being and providing education to ensure they have the necessary qualifications for the future.
Commenting, Jo said:
“St Mary’s has come a long way over the last ten years, working to create a more positive and welcoming environment for the young people in its care. This is no doubt thanks to the dedication and hard work of the leadership team and staff.
“Many of the young people here have had challenging and difficult pasts and require special attention to address their unique needs. By focusing on well-being and education, St Mary’s is giving young people the holistic care they deserve to make sure they have opportunities to develop and can lead promising lives in the future.”
