Jo comments on Smith Commission

Today the Smith Commission published its proposals for further powers for the Scottish Parliament.

Commenting, Jo said:

“For years the Liberal Democrats have championed Scottish Home Rule and I’m delighted to see this bold package of powers recommended by the Smith Commission.

Delivering the Smith Commission recommendations will mean the Scottish Parliament raising the majority of the money it spends, being better able to work constructively with the UK government on areas of joint interest, and wielding significant welfare powers. With £20billion tax powers and £2.5billion new welfare powers this is a big deal for Scotland.

If Scotland wants to cut tax for those on low and middle incomes, like Lib Dems have done across the UK, it can choose that.

This agreement delivers on the vow made by the Prime Minister, Deputy Prime Minister and Leader of the Opposition before the referendum.
