Jo celebrates Post Office DVLA win

Jo Swinson MP for East Dunbartonshire and Minister for Post Offices attended an event on Monday to show support for the Post Office DVLA win by signing a dedicated congratulations board.

The event was to celebrate the institution’s contract to provide accessible driving licence and tax services to millions of customers in the UK, including in East Dunbartonshire.

Commenting Jo said:

“The Post Office is a vital part of communities in East Dunbartonshire and has long provided a platform for essential and every day government services.

“As Post Office Minister I know how much this institution is loved up and down the UK and this shows that it is also a modern, independent, competitive business delivering on its ambitions to become a ‘front office’ for Government.

“I am dedicated to ensuring local residents can easily access services they need and think this is another step in reaching that goal.”

Martin Moran, Commercial Director at the Post Office said:

“We are delighted to have Jo’s support. The Post Office has a strong track record in successfully delivering essential government services. Winning the DVLA contract again is testimony to the quality of our staff and subpostmasters, whose longstanding commitment to serving local communities contributed greatly to this success.”

The Post Office secured the seven year Framework Agreement with Department of Transport in November 2012. It confirms that the Post Office will continue to deliver DVLA services from spring 2013, including:

  • Driving Licence photocard renewal
  • Motor Vehicle Licence Issue
  • Statutory off road notices (SORN)
  • Duplicate Vehicle Licence.

Many other driver transactions and motor vehicles services will also be offered through Post Office branches as a result of the agreement, meaning customers will be able to access a wide range of DVLA services under one roof.

The Post Office, now independent of Royal Mail, has an unrivalled national network of over 11,500 branches across the UK, more than all the high street banks combined, and sits at the heart of many communities across the country. The Post Office has made a commitment to no more branch closure programmes. It provides around 170 different services and products spanning financial services including savings, insurance, loans, mortgages and credit cards. Post Office also offers Government services; telephony; foreign currency; travel insurance and mail services.

It serves around 20 million customers a week and half of all small businesses. More than 99 % of people live within three miles of a Post Office branch. For many rural communities the Post Office is the only retail outlet. Post Offices remain highly valued and trusted and are the focal point for many communities.
