Jo celebrates local history with fundraising Soroptimists

Jo attended a Kirkintilloch and District Soroptimists dinner to celebrate local history in Kirkintilloch’s 800th year as a borough.

Jo recently joined around 40 of the organisation’s local members for dinner to hear local historian and archivist Don Martin to hear about East Dunbartonshire’s unique history. On the 800th anniversary of Kirkintilloch, Mr Martin highlighted its rich heritage and changes to the town throughout the years.

As well as celebrating local history, Kirkintilloch and District Soroptimists, part of the international Soroptimist organisation for businesswomen, have used their professional experience to make a difference to women across the globe. Meeting regularly since 1974, members have fundraised for charities from the local Seagull Trust to sponsoring an eye health camp in Bangladesh.

Commenting, Jo said:

“It was a pleasure to be invited by Kirkintilloch and District Soroptimist to Don Martin’s informative and colourful history talk. As proven by strong local challenges to plans that go against the character of our communities, like the removal of greenbelt status from local sites in Lenzie, East Dunbartonshire’s local history and heritage is of great value.

“We are lucky to have groups like the Soroptimists in East Dunbartonshire, who raise a large amount of money for charities to improve the chances of people at home and abroad. It was fantastic to meet the ethusiastic and dedicated women who are behind the club’s succesful book stalls and coffee mornings, and hear about their experiences making a difference overseas, from Tajikistan to Bangladesh.”
