Jo and Angela Rippon
Teaming up with TV presenter and former carer Angela Rippon, Jo praised the extraordinary contribution made by carers and urged that they receive more support.
As part of this year’s Carers Week (13th-19th June), Jo paid tribute to the efforts made by thousands of people throughout East Dunbartonshire and the UK, providing unpaid care for someone who is ill, frail or disabled.
The theme of this year’s Carers Week 2011 is ‘The True Face of Carers’, highlighting the need for greater recognition of all those with caring responsibilities.
Commenting, Jo said:
“This year’s Carers Week is an important opportunity to raise awareness of the realities of life as a carer. Enormous personal sacrifices are made every day by Scotland’s 660,000 carers in order to care for loved ones, who deserve to be recognised for their tremendous contribution to society.
“From my past meetings with East Dunbartonshire’s Carers’ Link, I am aware of the support that carers work tirelessly to provide to family members or friends, the isolation this can bring, and the need to recognise and value their hard work.”
Carers Week is organised by a partnership of 9 national charities: Age UK, Carers UK, Counsel & Care, Crossroads Care, Dementia UK, Macmillan Cancer Support, MS Society, Parkinson’s UK, and The Princess Royal Trust for Carers.
