Jo applauds local shops’ ‘No ID, No Sale’ policy

Jo Swinson MP called on local retailers last week to support the ‘No ID, No Sale!’ campaign to ensure that only adults can buy alcohol, tobacco and other age-restricted goods.

Staff currently face fines of £10,000 if caught persistently selling alcohol to under-18s. In order to address the issue of underage sales of restricted goods, the police-endorsed CitizenCard scheme was launched in February 1999, and more than two million cards bearing the PASS hologram have been issued since.

Meeting at Murdo’s Corner Shop in Bearsden with proprietors Murdo Young and Siobhan Friar, and CitizenCard’s Marketing Manager Nigel Catlow, Jo Swinson commented:

“The CitizenCard is a great for young adults in East Dunbartonshire to obtain ID that contains a police-endorsed PASS hologram, and is cheaper than a driving licence or passport. This will help local retailers to fully implement the ‘No ID, No Sale!’ policy which ensures children cannot buy alcohol, tobacco and other restricted goods.”

Proprietor Murdo Young said:

“We have no wish to supply alcohol or cigarettes to children and we offer our younger customers a CitizenCard which means they can prove their age. Every week we face dozens of attempts to buy alcohol and tobacco by young people and if they cannot present valid ID we always refuse the sale.”
