Friendship Circle valuable service bringing elderly together – Jo

Jo Swinson MP for East Dunbartonshire visited the Friendship Circle in Milngavie to see how volunteers led by Jennifer Donald bring older people in the community together.

The club is run entirely by volunteers and was founded 19 years ago by Jennifer who was recently became a Medallist of the British Empire for her services to older people in the area in the Queen’s 2013 New Years Honours List.

The Friendship Circle provides an opportunity for housebound elderly people in the Milngavie area to meet up each week and have lunch, chat with friends and take day trips.

Commenting Jo Swinson said:

“The Friendship Circle is invaluable to its members.  It’s a wonderful, inspiring idea and it really helps improve the quality of life for some of Milngavie’s older residents.

“I’ve always said that Jennifer and the other volunteers should be congratulated for the job they do and her New Year’s honour was recognition on a grand scale.

“Jennifer has asked to be presented with her medal at the Friendship Circle which is a fitting tribute to the work of all the volunteers!”
