Cadder Pit Disaster memorial to be unveiled


Jo Swinson MP for East Dunbartonshire is paying tribute to the 22 men who died in the Cadder Pit disaster.  A memorial service to commemorate the men who lost their lives one hundred years ago will take place outside Bishopbriggs Library at 2pm on Sunday, 4 August.

  The disaster on Sunday 3 August 1913 and claimed the lives of 22 men from Mavis Valley in Bishopbriggs and Lambhill in Glasgow.

A memorial cairn dedicated to all 22 miners who lost their lives will be unveiled at the ceremony.  Further tributes include an exhibition at Bishopbriggs Library and publications produced by local historians Bill Finlay and Don Martin.

Commenting Jo said:

 “The centenary of this event is a tragic reminder of the risks people experienced every day working in coal pits.

“This will be the first time that the names of all 22 men who died in the disaster will be included on the same memorial and will ensure they will never be forgotten.”
