Jo's Road to Referendum Campaign

The Independence Referendum on Thursday 18th September will be the biggest decision facing the Scottish people at the ballot box for generations.

While some people already have firm views either for independence or for staying part of the UK, I know from speaking to many local residents that others are finding it difficult to make up their minds.  Personally, I believe passionately that Scotland should remain within the UK.

As East Dunbartonshire’s MP, I want to make sure that people have access to the information they need to come to an informed decision.  Between now and September, I will be holding a series of open public meetings across the constituency for local people to consider the issues facing us ahead of the Independence Referendum.

The Better Together Campaign (2013 - 2014)

This year Scotland will face an historic vote on whether or not to remain part of the United Kingdom.

Local MP Jo Swinson has been out and about campaigning to help keep us in the UK, and has gained the support of thousands of East Dunbartonshire residents for the campaign.

Commenting, Jo said “The independence referendum is the biggest and most important decision Scots will make for generations. In terms of our economy, our place in the world, and our shared heritage I passionately believe that Scotland and the rest of the UK are better together.  Speaking to people on the doorsteps across East Dunbartonshire I know many people share this view. I will be working hard between now and September to communicate the benefits of staying as part of the UK so we can secure Scotland’s future in the United Kingdom.”

More powers for Scotland within the UK
Liberal Democrats have long campaigned for Home Rule for Scotland, a new deal which will see more powers for the Scottish Parliament over areas like tax, but keep us within the UK. Read our report ‘Federalism: the best future for Scotland’ here.

Jo Swinson MP said: “I think we can have the best of both worlds as part of the UK – a strong Scottish Parliament to make decisions here, with a UK Government that pulls together the best from across our four nations.”
