Politics was brought to life for Bearsden Academy’s Higher Politics class today, as Jo Swinson joined pupils learning about contemporary political issues.
Jo discussed the current project the class is carrying out on conflict and cooperation between Holyrood and Westminster. While at the school, she also spoke to an Advanced Higher Modern Studies class on the topic of law and order.
Commenting after the visit, Jo said:
“The Higher Modern Studies class has taken on a project that addresses one of the big issues in British politics – how to resolve the institutional conflicts that currently exist between Holyrood and Westminster. In that respect, they are not unlike a lot of the politicians in the country!
“When visiting local schools, I am continually impressed at the pupils’ inquisitiveness and grasp of the political issues affecting their lives. Global issues like climate change and conflict are often close to the minds of young people, who grasp the seriousness of the challenges that these issues are going to present to them in future.
“If it can be properly encouraged throughout school and beyond, this kind of active engagement in current affairs bodes well for the next generation of young political participants.”
